DMAIC the essence of Six Sigma Certification, Training and
Implementation
DMAIC forms the basis of Six sigma and clearly the baseline for implementing any
six sigma project. While undergoing Six Sigma Training or Six Sigma green belt
certification the first thing that would be introduced to a person is DMAIC.
Thus it is essential to know what DMAIC is.
DMAIC means define, measure, analyze, improve and control. Now the question
arises what is the requirement for this model. This can be explained as follows,
members of six sigma teams come from various different departments, job levels,
backgrounds, skills and seniority, when they come together and form a six sigma
team, they all are equal and capabilities and contributions of each member is an
important key to achieve the required breakthrough and success in the six sigma
projects. Thus DMAIC provides a common working ground and a path on which the
team can tread without any friction for the rest of the time till they are
working on a particular project.
The job of these
six sigma teams is improvement, problem solving, and process design. They
are expected to solve organizational problems and to capitalize on opportunities
and lead the organization to achieve the desired goals. DAMIC helps these teams
to work in sync towards a common goal which ultimately leads to organizational
improvement.
Thus DMAIC is a model which has been developed to bring diverse teams together,
so that all members can work under one common strategy and get the work done.
When working under this DMAIC process the team
Interacts with other sections of the organization.
Collects data - Interviewing customers
Getting feedback from other members of the organization whose work is effected
by DMAIC team’s recommendations.
Thus DMAIC forms a basis for implementing the six sigma strategy for an existing
business process and is quite effective in almost all cases wherever it has been
implemented so far. DMAIC is also called the soul of Six Sigma as all the
activities of a team and an individual revolve around these five phases.
